Dave Lee Retiring From WCCO
• After a successful 32-year run with Entercom News-Talk 830 WCCO/Minneapolis, Dave Lee, host Morning News with Dave Lee, announced his impending retirement, effective April 30. In a Friday staff memo, Shannon Knoepke, SVP/Market Manager of Entercom Minneapolis said of Lee, “In this business there are legends, there are icons, and then there is Dave Lee. On April 30th, he will depart as one of the most successful and enduring radio hosts in the long and iconic history of WCCO Radio. It’s hard to imagine radio without him.”
Lee’s radio career began at the Mighty 790 KFGO/Fargo, ND as PD & afternoon drive host before joining WCCO in 1989. Over the course of his impressive career, Lee has earned a prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award, numerous honors from the Associated Press, a Marconi nomination and three Emmy Awards.
Knoepke added, “Not only has Dave been an award-winning morning personality during his 32 years at WCCO Radio, but his talents also include exceptional play-by-play of football, basketball, and baseball — from the high school level, to college, to the major leagues. Most of all, Dave is dedicated to his community and family. He is the consummate professional in career and in life. What’s more, Dave Lee has endorsed dozens of products and services for local and national advertisers. His credibility and sincere approach are unsurpassed. Dave’s charitable side is even more impressive.”
In closing, Knoepke said, “We’re going to miss Dave Lee. He has had the responsibility of picking up for legends he’s replaced. Now we have to replace the legend of Dave Lee, which feels impossible as we today celebrate his years of entertaining and informing us on WCCO. Over the next few months, we’ll have a chance to hear more stories and memories before he signs off for good, but for now it’s thank you, thank you, thank you, Dave Lee.” Lee’s major on-air announcement is posted at WCCO’s website.
