The Mighty 1090, Over & Out
• That proverbial “other shoe” has now dropped at Broadcast Company of the Americas’ Sports-Talk XEPRS-AM (The Mighty 1090)/San Diego, which yesterday ceased operations completely. The station’s programming had been available online only since April 10, when the station’s Mexican tower landlords pulled the plug on the over-the-air feed and began simulcasting Bi-Media Classic Hits KJAV-FM (Ultra 104.9), which serves the McAllen, TX market.
According to Barrett Sports Media, the station’s streaming feed was cut off without warning during Darren Smith‘s midday show on Monday, April 29. “And that’s a wrap,” Smith tweeted at 2:06pm. “Right in the middle of the show.” For what it’s worth, Smith’s Twitter profile now lists him as “Free agent radio host living in San Diego, California.”
The demise of The Mighty 1090 marks the latest in a series of increasingly sad chapters in an ongoing financial dispute between BCA and the folks who own the stations’ towers in Mexico. On December 15, 2018, two of the cluster’s stations — Classic Hits XHPRS (105.7 MAX FM) and XEPE-AM (ESPN 1700) were taken over by the transmitters’ landlord in Mexico, who subsequently shut XHPRS off and changed format on the AM to Spanish language Sports.
As of now, the only remaining vestige of The Mighty 1090 is this message posted on the station’s now defunct website that reads, “For the last two weeks, Mighty 1090 programming has only been available online and through our mobile app. We can’t thank you enough for bearing with us through this ordeal. Unfortunately, we have ceased operations. We are forever grateful for your passion, loyalty, and all your support over the years.”
