The Making of A Mightier 1090

• Almost exactly a year after former San Diego Sports-Talk outlet XEPRS-AM (The Mighty 1090) went dark after 16 years for financial reasons, plans are now afoot to resurrect the station — this time as “The Mightier 1090” — featuring more than just Sports.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Bill Hagen, the owner of Flagstaff, AZ-based Out The Window Advertising has reportedly inked a five-year lease on the broadcast rights from the owner of the powerful Baja California-based signal, Andres Bichara Assad of Interamericana de Radio in Rosarito, Mexico.

Hagen has set a goal of this summer, “if not sooner,” as the target date for the launch. “We have to a ton of work to do,” Hagen told the Union-Tribune. “We just wanted to announce that it is coming back.” While Hagen was short on specifics, he did say that Scott Kaplan, former co-host of The Scott & BR Show on The Mighty 1090, will be involved in “The Mightier 1090.” As of now, no other personalities are under contract. “Sports is going to be just part of it,” Hagen said. “There will be sports there — but it’s not going to be just 24/7 talking about sports. Absolutely, it will be about lifestyle.”

Because of the station’s monster signal, Hagen says The Mightier 1090 will target listeners throughout Southern California, not just San Diego, Hagen said. Because of the 50,000-watt signal, 1090 broadcasts can be heard clearly as far north as Santa Barbara.
