Reno Ready To Discover NV89

We cleverly teased this news in yesterday’s RAMP, and today, it’s official — at midnight last night, Nevada Public Radio launched its newest Music Discovery channel in Reno, NV — Triple A KVNV (NV89) is now live. “We’re thrilled to be expanding into Reno, now home of Tesla’s Gigafactory and the world’s largest data campus of Las Vegas-based Switch Communications,” said Florence Rogers, President & CEO of NVPR. “NV89 will complement the current public media offerings available and be a catalyst for new content and partnerships.”

NV89, formerly KJIV, is under the command of market vet Willobee Carlan (right), a 30-year industry pro who joins Nevada Public Radio as NV89’s Operations Manager and Program Director. Carlan was most recently Director of Broadcast Operations for Shamrock Communications in Reno. Carlan commented, “Reno is already an incredible place to call home and now we have a true home for local and emerging artists. In knowing and assessing the local radio landscape, NV89 beautifully fills a void in our community. The journey ahead is shaping up to be fulfilling and promising.”

Working with consultant Mike Henry of Paragon Media Strategies, Carlan has assembled an elite team of on-air talent that includes (pictured, l-r): former tour/stage manager and Life is Beautiful music coordinator Jake Wagner (6-10pm); former KTHX/Reno midday personality Malayna Joy (mornings); KROQ/Los Angeles alum and “Cocktails in the Kiddie Pool” host Gia DeSantis (middays), and Willobee (2-6pm). NPR’s World Café will air weeknights from 10pm-midnight and Steve Masters (ex-MTV, Live 105) will do 2-6pm on the weekends, starting April 29.

Erik Langner of Public Media Company managed the acquisition for NVPR. In addition to its Reno frequency, NV89 is streaming online at NV89.org and on KNPR HD3 through its network of repeater stations in Nevada, Utah, Arizona and California. [Photo credit: Digiman Studios/Frank Haxton]
