WHUR Legend Patrick Ellis Passes

• We are deeply saddened to report that DMV radio legend Patrick Ellis, who hosted Gospel Spirit on Howard University’s 96.3 WHUR/Washington for more than four decades, died Thursday, July 16 due to complications from the coronavirus.

Ellis, who held the distinction of being the longest-running air personality in Washington radio, had been hospitalized since last month for treatment of COVID-19. “We had been praying and hoping for a different outcome and are sad to report the passing of our beloved colleague and friend,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater.

Ellis had been a staple on WHUR for more than 40 years as host of Gospel Spirit, which had aired Sunday mornings from 6-11am since 1979. His comforting mix of church news, birthday and anniversary announcements, sprinkled with gospel music made him a fan favorite for listeners around the DMV. His philanthropic efforts at the station and in the community have helped feed thousands, provided care for substance-addicted babies, and assisted in building a shelter for survivors of domestic violence and their children.

Plater added, “Patrick was part of the backbone of this station and community. Like so many, our hearts are heavy. We send our condolences out to his immediate family and to all those who were touched by him over the years through the airwaves on Sunday morning.”

Funeral services for Ellis have not yet been announced. His many fans are invited to send notes of condolences to his family c/o WHUR, 529 Bryant Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20059 or leave a message on the Patrick Ellis Tribute Line at 202-750-4924.
