Upton Over & Out @ Entercom San Diego

RAMP has learned that Nick Upton, Digital Content Manager for Entercom San Diego and a fixture in the building for more than 43 years, was terminated on Thursday, Nov. 7.

Upton joined Country KSON as a part-timer in 1977 under original owner Dan McKinnon, and successfully survived subsequent ownership changes to Jefferson-Pilot, Lincoln Financial Media and Entercom. In 1978 Upton was upped to full-time nights on KSON, and later did mornings, afternoons and a long stretch in middays, going on to serve as KSON’s Music Director for 14 years until 1998.

Upton’s transition into the Digital Department began in the early ’90s when he designed, launched and managed KSON’s first website. His on-air tenure with KSON ended in 2013 when his full-time attention was required in the Digital Department, which had grown to encompass nine websites, accompanying social media channels and a rapidly growing video department that produces extensive content for both programming, promotions and sales. Upton later went back on the air for a time on Classic Hits sister KXSN (Sunny 98.1), and more recently, on AC KyXy 96.5.

Looking back on his amazing four-decade run in the building, Upton said, “When you find a station where everything works — management and talent all getting along and working well together — it’s a magical thing. KSON was exactly that for so long and over the years I never had a desire to leave. While turmoil raged at other stations and companies, this group seemed to stay immune to the worst of it, avoiding, until recently, the pain and disruption of consolidation and severe personnel cuts. As they say, the only constant is change… and change it did.”

Upton is now looking to put his decades of invaluable experience to work for [your company logo here]. He can be easily contacted at 619-993-3560 and nupton@cox.net.
