Jubelirer Exiting As Capitol Chair & CEO
• RAMP has learned that Michelle Jubelirer is exiting her position as Capitol Music Group Chair and CEO. This news comes less than a week after UMG Chairman & CEO Lucian Grainge announced a massive corporate restructuring that moves Capitol, Geffen, Interscope, Motown, Priority, Verve and Blue Note Records under the leadership of Interscope Geffen A&M Chairman & CEO John Janick, while Republic CEO Monte Lipman will have oversight of Republic, Def Jam, Island, and Mercury Records.
Jubelirer broke the news of her departure in a staff memo that reads, in part, “To my Capitol Music Group Team, I wanted you to hear this news directly from me: I’ve made the extremely difficult decision to leave the company that has been my home for more than a decade, and so, today will be my last as Chair & CEO of Capitol Music Group.
I am deeply saddened that I will no longer be at the company we rebuilt and took to new heights over the past two years. As I’ve said before, I don’t think any label group has been able to turn things around as quickly as we have managed to, and I’m certain that we’ve set Capitol Music Group on course toward a great future.”
Jubelirer joined Capitol Music Group in 2013 as Executive Vice President under Steve Barnett, shortly after its acquisition by UMG. She was named CMG COO in 2015, and took on the additional responsibilities of President in 2020. She was elevated to her current position in December 2021, succeeding Jeff Vaughn, becoming the first female executive to head the company in its 80-year history.
As Variety‘s coverage of Jubelirer’s departure chillingly states, “The move is the first in what is expected to be hundreds of departures in a forthcoming reorganization of Capitol parent Universal Music Group.” [Photo credit: Michael Fulton]
