Current Expects Another Icy Reception
• Minnesota Public Radio’s 89.3 The Current/Minneapolis has been invited back to broadcast at the Iceland Airwaves Festival, a four-day music event featuring hundreds of emerging musical acts from around the world. This year’s festival boasts over 220 artists from almost 30 countries. Now celebrating its 20th year, the festival, which runs from Wednesday, November 7 through Saturday, November 10 will once again welcome The Current to share the Reykjavik-based events through live broadcast, interviews and studio sessions. “This will be our second year broadcasting live from Iceland, which still boggles our minds that we are able to share live music from this beautiful island and bring it to our listeners around the world,” said Jim McGuinn, PD of The Current. “Iceland is one of the most unique places on earth, and Airwaves has become one of the best music discovery destinations annually.”
Current evening personality Mark Wheat will broadcast from what has been affectionately dubbed “The Current Haus” at Skuli Craft Bar in Reykjavik November 8-10 while giving listeners detailed reports about the food, the people, and the culture of this very special place. The Current Haus will also feature sessions with Aurora, Hildur, JFDR, Natalie Prass and other artists. “I’m looking forward to returning for this year’s Iceland Airwaves Festival,” Wheat said. “It’s an awesome place to discover new music, in an absolutely unique community that values the celebration of the creative arts.”
Wheat will be broadcasting from Iceland Airwaves on Friday, November 9 from 6-10pm CT and Saturday, November 10 from 3-7pm CT at thecurrent.org. The Current Music News podcast will also feature updates from Iceland Airwaves, adding context to the culture surrounding the festival’s music. [Photo credit: Nate Ryan/ MPR]
