Hey RI: Gio Has Unretired!

• Rhode Island radio icon Giovanni, who famously spent 50 years with Cumulus Top 40 WPRO (92 PRO FM)/Providence — the last 25 in mornings until his April 2024 “retirement,” is officially off the bench and back in the game — hired by iHeartMedia to do afternoon drive on Classic Hits WWBB (B101)/Providence, starting today! B101 Morning duo Kristin & Steve (along with a very special guest) will make the official announcement on-air this morning at 8:40am.

“Giovanni is a Rhode Island legend,” said Adam Rivers, Program Director of B101. “To have him back on the airwaves entertaining commuters during their ride home across Southern New England, is nothing short of tremendous. We’re thrilled to have him on the B101 team.”

Gio, whose given name is Daniel Centofanti, joined PRO FM as a teenage programming assistant and fill-in jock shortly after its Top 40 launch on April 29, 1974. During the ensuing years he worked his way up through the ranks, doing middays and nights before he was promoted into the morning chair in 1999 — where he reigned until his final show on April 29, 2024 — 50 years to the day in the building.

“I’m thrilled for the opportunity to join B101,” said Giovanni. “It’s a great fit for me, and I have to admit — I’m especially excited that I don’t have to wake up at 4am!”
