It’s All Downhill From Here
The cast and crew of Beasley’s WMMR/Philadelphia are still recovering after surviving Preston & Steve’s 11th annual “Cardboard Classic.” Jack Frost Mountain in the Poconos was the scene of this majestic event, which attracted over 8000 skiers, spectators and assorted ne’er do wells who made the trip to the annual winter spectacle inspired by WMMR’s Preston & Steve morning show — a competition for homemade sleds constructed only of cardboard, rope, glue and tape. Most of the participants riding the 125 entered sleds were fully immersed in the spirit of the event and descended the slopes dressed for the occasion.
In the words of alert eyewitness Bill Weston, who is also rumored to be programming WMMR, “The designs ranged from the ridiculous to the sublime — a cardboard cake splitting open to reveal the famous ‘Deathmobile’ from Animal House (pictured); a 40 x 15 border wall, and numerous beer-themed sleds competing for sponsor Victory Brewing’s prize — ‘Beer For A Year.'”
The Grand Prize — $1000 in cash, went to nearly full-scale fishing trawler. No, seriously. Weston added, “The level of creativity and weirdness is the perfect reflection and fulfillment of what Marconi and Philo T. Farnsworth envisioned for our industry.” Check out all of weird and wonderful souvenir photos posted on WMMR’s Facebook page. We’ll wait here. [Photo credit: Chorus Photography]
