Don Imus Signing Off
• The end of the Don Imus era is scheduled for the end of March, as Imus yesterday announced that his long-running Imus in the Morning show would come to an end on March 29. The show’s Twitter feed said, “March 29th, 2018, will be the last ‘Imus in the Morning Program.’ Turn out the lights… the party’s over.”
As the New York Daily News reports, the 77-year-old Imus explained that his contract was slated to end in December, but the syndicator of his show, Cumulus Media, filed for bankruptcy last year and decided to move on from Imus sooner rather than pay him millions of dollars to finish out the year. “They have a responsibility, as far as the bankruptcy, to try to cut costs, to save money and figure out a way to make the thing work,” Imus told his listeners yesterday.
The syndicated program, which airs weekdays from 6 to 9am ET, is currently carried on 84 stations across America, including its flagship, Cumulus News-Talk WABC/New York, which first began airing the show in late 2007, the same year he was dropped by WFAN for making those now infamous comments about the Rutgers women’s basketball team.
