‘Mex: Where Legends Have Lunch’

• Friday the 13th has been traditionally known as an unlucky day — unless your name happens to be Fred Jacobs. Last Friday, the famous consultant, accompanied by his equally legendary brother Paul strolled into Mex in Bloomfield Township, Michigan for what turned out to be a surprise luncheon celebrating Fred’s forthcoming (and well deserved) induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame.

A whole bunch of Fred’s friends, fans and colleagues past and present were on hand to witness what turned into an incredible reunion of numerous alumni of the iconic WRIF/Detroit. As it says here in the colorful brochure, Fred was the program director of The Riff in the mid-’70s and the originator of the Classic Rock format. Naturally, “Radio’s Best Friend” Art Vuolo got it all on video and it’s already edited and posted to YouTube.

Pictured, among all of the well-wishers, (l-r): Jacobs Media President Paul Jacobs, former WRIF PD Michael Mayer, former WRIF personalities Arthur Penhallow and Ken Calvert, Fred Jacobs, former WRIF PD Mark Pasman, former WRIF VP/GM Tom Bender and current WRIF PD Mark Pennington.
