DX’ing Never Not Cool

• Always nice to hear from Brad Savage, PD of Akron Public Schools-owned non-comm Triple A WAPS (91.3 The Summit)/Akron-Canton-Youngstown-Athens, OH, whose Friday specialty show Cruisin’ The Decades has now gone global via… wait for it… shortwave! Stay with us here…

Cruisin’ The Decades is a 100-year journey through recorded music history that spotlights one song per decade (1910’s, ’20s, ’30s, etc., up to 2020’s). The show has become quite popular regionally since its 2020 launch, and now, via a unique partnership with Okeechobee, FL-based commercial shortwave broadcaster WRMI (Radio Miami International), and the “Global Edition” of the show is now carried on WRMI 9955 kHZ, a 100,000-watt shortwave signal (in the 31 meter band), Sundays at 2200 UTC (5pm ET). WRMI is the largest shortwave operator in North America and has received correspondence from every continent.

Savage said, “I’ve talked on AM, FM, carrier-current, and even the loudspeaker at the gas station, but I’ve never had my voice or music selections heard around the world on shortwave! It’s a privilege and an honor to broadcast on Radio Miami International’s airwaves, and I’m eager to see if we get any QSL cards from exotic listening locations.”

Savage continued, “Yes, there’s also a webcast at wrmi.net, but that’s kinda cheating isn’t it? Tune in via your shortwave… you know you’ve got one somewhere! In a world of digital everything, on-demand and connectedness, I think shortwave brings the wonder of radio and the science of signals back to the forefront. My kids (8 & 5) are so excited to tune it in and DX the signal, over-the-air!”
