Hurricane Headed To Los Angeles
• Veteran programmer David Glenn Smith, a.k.a. “Hurricane Dave” is joining the team at Stevie Wonder-owned Urban AC 102.3 KJLH/Los Angeles as a programming, marketing and operations consultant.
In making the announcement, VP/GM Karen Slade said, “We are happy to have Hurricane Dave consult Team KJLH. His understanding of the industry, strategic programming and marketing expertise in this multiplatform era is welcomed and exciting.”
Hurricane Dave has programmed nearly a dozen No. 1 radio stations in various formats, from Hip Hop to Classic Rock, most recently in Atlanta, where he spent the better part of a decade with Radio One Atlanta, rising from Operations Manager to VP of Programming & Operations in Dec. 2016, also overseeing the company’s brands in Charlotte, Richmond, Raleigh and Reach Media Atlanta. He previously served as Executive Producer for ABC Radio Networks-syndicated Doug Banks Morning Show. Hurricane’s extensive programming resume includes WENZ (Z107.9)/Cleveland, WIZF (The Wiz)/Cincinnati, WOWI/Norfolk, WAMO/Pittsburgh, WBLK/Buffalo, and two stints as OM of Cumulus Tallahassee. He started his on-air career at KKDA (K104)/Dallas and KMJQ (Majic 102)/Houston.
“I can’t think of another time when starting a new opportunity where I had such a clear vision on day one,” Smith said. “KJLH is a globally recognized brand where all of Los Angeles feels comfortable listening to generations of amazing music with no restrictions. That’s why it’s called ‘Radio Free’ — if it’s a great song we can play it. Radio Free KJLH has the largest library of music of any radio station in Los Angeles. This is going to be exciting.”
