Johnny Chaing Leaving Radio For Records
• After 31 years in radio, 29 years with Cox Media Group — the last 21 years as Operations Manager of CMG Houston, Johnny Chiang is leaving radio and joining Red Street Country, a new Country imprint under the umbrella of Red Street Records, the Christian label launched in 2018 by former Rascal Flatts bassist Jay DeMarcus. Chaing is joining the start-up as VP of Radio Promotions & Artist Development, and the label has inked Ryan Griffin as its first artist.
Chiang started his career with the former Cox Broadcasting at KFI/Los Angeles in 1991 before moving to Houston in 2000 to launch KHPT, and soon after was named PD of legendary Country outlet KKBQ (93Q). In 2006, he was elevated to OM of CMG Houston’s cluster, racking up numerous recognitions and awards over the years including his induction into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.
“We thank Johnny for his many years of leadership with CMG and service to the Houston community and wish him well as he sets off on this new adventure,” said Keith Lawless, CMG Regional Vice President. Rob Babin, SVP & Head of CMG Radio added, “Johnny’s positive impact on our CMG radio brands and people will continue for many years and we wish him well in this new chapter in his career.”
Chiang commented, “In my nearly 30 years at CMG, I’ve been blessed with the best teammates anyone could ever hope to have. Thank you for your trust in me to lead some of the best radio brands in America. You are my CMG family, and that will never change.”
In the immediate future, Chiang will assist in this important transition and will continue to work with CMG Houston through the Houston Rodeo and Livestock Show, which ends in late March. That being said, the search for Chiang’s successor to oversee KKBQ (93Q), Classic Rock KGLK (106.9/107.5 The Eagle) and KTHT (97.1 Country Legends), begins today.
