KTFM/San Antonio Flips To Sports

• Alpha Media has exited the Top 40 battle in San Antonio, as the company makes the decision to flush the format on KTFM (Energy 94.1) in favor of turbo-charging the reach of Sports-Talk clustermate KZDC-1250 AM (San Antonio’s Sports Star), thanks to a simulcast on 94.1. The move leaves iHeartMedia’s KXXM (96.1 NOW) alone in the format.

One person who seems particularly thrilled with this major signal upgrade is Jason Minnix, co-host of The Blitz, afternoons from 4-7pm on San Antonio’s Sports Star. In a lengthy online post, Minnix said, “Moving to 94.1 is huge — the signal is 37 times bigger than what we had yesterday. You know I am a music guy, so this is like a band that started playing clubs, moved to arenas and is now playing massive stadiums… This is like moving from Alamo Ranch to the Dominion.” Minnix added, “This move to 94.1 gives San Antonio one of the biggest sports stations signal wise in the state. Dallas has a sports station with a bigger signal. Houston doesn’t. Austin doesn’t.”

The storied KTFM call letters were long associated with 102.7FM in San Antonio over the years through various formats. The calls were revived in 2005 on 94.1 as Rhythmic Oldies “Jammin’ 94.1”, and in Jan. 2016 Alpha Media rebranded KTFM as “Energy 94.1” in line with sister stations KLLY (Energy 95.3)/Bakersfield and WNGY (Energy 102.3)/Peoria, IL.
