Norfolk’s Eagle Reboots Mornings & Middays
• Max Media of Hampton Roads announced new morning and midday shows on heritage Country WGH-FM (97.3 The Eagle)/Norfolk-Virginia Beach — the action begins with Karen West, 30-year market veteran and the Eagle’s current APD/MD, unplugging from middays and moving up to mornings as solo host. Replacing West in middays will be another familiar face — Barry McKay.
In making the announcement, VP/Market Manager Keith Barton remarked, “Karen has been a mainstay for Country radio in our market for more than three decades. It’s natural for her to wake up with our listeners every weekday morning. Her move to mornings created a great opportunity for a Hampton Roads radio veteran like Barry to move to the midday slot on Eagle. We are very excited for them both as well as our listeners!”
West remarked, “After many years in the midday slot, I’m thrilled about this new chapter in my career! I’m excited for this fresh start, which brings limitless opportunities to unleash my creativity!”
McKay’s extensive radio resume includes an earlier PD stint across the street at Entercom/Audacy Hot AC WPTE (94.9 The Point). Other programming stops include Sandusky Radio Seattle and WMXB (B103.7)/Richmond, and he was APD at KHMX (Mix 96.5)/Houston and WERQ (92Q)/Baltimore in the mid-’90s. McKay started his career at WTBO/Cumberland, MD.
“It’s an absolute thrill to reconnect with all the amazing listeners in Hampton Roads!” McKay exclaimed. “I’m beyond excited to be back on the airwaves at this amazing heritage station. A huge shoutout to the incredible team at Max Media for providing me with this incredible opportunity and I can’t wait to spend our workday together, so buckle up y’all, let the good times roll!”
