‘Swift’ Named PD Of WKYS/Washington
• Radio One Urban 93.9 WKYS/Washington has filled its PD vacancy with the talents of Mike “Swift” Powell, effective June 10. The position has been open since Joshua “J1” Raiford left in early March.
Swift is a New Orleans native who started his radio career in 2005 as an air personality with KMEZ/New Orleans, moving up the ranks to APD and PD. Over the next 15 years Swift gained valuable programming experience in multiple formats including Urban, Rhythmic and Mainstream Top 40, Alternative and Urban AC. Powell left New Orleans in 2017 for a programming position with Core Communicators Broadcasting in Charlotte, and since 2018 he has worked for Flinn Broadcasting in Memphis.
Kashon Powell, VP of Programming, remarked, “I’m excited to have Mike take on this role. His experience, passion for the format and enthusiasm will certainly be an asset to our DC team.”
Swift said, “First and foremost, I would like to thank Kashon Powell for giving me this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I feel incredibly humbled to be chosen to lead such an iconic brand as WKYS, and I look forward to creating history with the staff at Radio One DC!”
Jeff Wilson, Sr. Regional Vice President, picked up the thread and commented, “Mike says a lot when he says ‘creating history’ — that’s what we do here at Radio One, DC, and I’m looking forward to blazing new trails with Mike on our amazing team.”
