Turns Out Orlando CAN Be Educational!

College Broadcasters Inc. (CBI) recently hosted the 2023 National Student Media Convention (NSMC) in sunny Orlando. Attendees heard from more than 25 media pros and attended more than 60 sessions to learn valuable skills to take back to their respective colleges and universities.

NSMC 2023 culminated last Saturday with the presentation of the National Student Production Awards, honoring the best student work in media production across 33 categories. Judges reviewed more than 900 total entries before honoring four finalists and one winner in each category. A complete list of winners, and clips of their winning work, are posted on the CBI website.

CBI also recognized two individuals for their outstanding commitment to student media — Dr. Charles “Chuck” Bailey, Professor of Journalism & Mass Communication and long-time faculty manager of Marshall University’s WMUL, earned this year’s Dave Black Excellence in Advising Award, and David Oxenford, partner with Wilkinson Barker Knauer LLP, won the Joel Willer Award, which recognizes individuals for their exceptional dedication and service to student media through CBI.

“It was wonderful to see everyone in the vibrant city of Orlando for the 21st Annual National Student Media Convention and National Student Production Awards!” said CBI President Anabella Poland (above, center), whose day job is GM of Montclair State University’s WMSC-FM. “The excitement was palpable as faculty, students and experts presented engaging sessions focused on the latest in the media industry including artificial intelligence and media coverage in the commercial space age, but also related these trending topics to the hyperlocal college media environment. I’m already looking forward to next year’s NSMC in Seattle, Washington!”

During the convention, CBI board members paused for this souvenir photo — (l-r): Jessica Clary, Events Director, (Virginia Commonwealth University); Steven Hames, Secretary, (Berry College); Sean McDonald, Treasurer, (Neumann University); John Owens, Vice President, (University of Cincinnati); Anabella Poland, President, (Montclair State University); Kailyn Shalosky, Student Rep, (Muskingum University); John Morris, Immediate Past President, (University of Southern Indiana); Chris Keppler, IT Content Director, (University of Akron); and Lynn Riggle, Development Director, (University of Mount Union).
