What’s Going On With Toucher & Rich?

• What’s going on at Beasley’s WBZ-FM (98.5 The Sports Hub)/Boston? The market was buzzing on Wednesday after Boston.com and other sources theorized that the log-running duo of Fred Toucher and Rich Shertenlieb was breaking up. Observers noted that Shertenlieb had changed the handle of the longtime @ToucherandRich Twitter feed to his own name, @heyrichhey.

Adding more mystery to the equation, Beasley sent out a press release (and this solo photo) announcing that Toucher “has signed a multiyear contract to continue to serve at the helm of 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston’s Award-winning morning show for years to come. Under Toucher’s tenure, the show has been recognized among the top sports morning shows in America and has won numerous national industry awards including a Marconi Award.”

Nowhere in the release is Shertenlieb’s name mentioned, as evidenced by the following quotes: “We are thrilled that Sports Hub listeners will be able to hear Fred’s unique brand of humor each weekday morning for years to come,” said Mary Menna, VP/Market Manager, Beasley Boston. PD Rick Radzik remarked, “Fred has been entertaining Sports Hub listeners each morning since 2009 with his compelling viewpoints and opinions on a wide range of topics. We are very pleased that he will continue on with us for years to come.”

Toucher said, “I am thrilled to be able to work with my Beasley family over the coming years. I will continue my record of immense competence and brilliance.”

Toucher & Rich were foundational members of the launch of The Sports Hub in August 2009. Before that, the guys worked at the late, legendary WBCN/Boston and the original 99X/Atlanta. We anxiously await some clarification from Beasley.

• Against this bizarre backdrop, The Sports Hub won the NAB Marconi Award for Sports Station of The Year — it’s fourth win — last night in New York.
