WMGK Taps Cord & Vassalotti For Mornings
• Beasley Classic Rock 102.9 WMGK/Philadelphia keeps it firmly in its radio family to find a worthy successor to recently retired radio legend John DeBella — say good morning to Matt Cord, longtime Philly radio fixture, who moves up from middays to the dawn patrol, where he will be joined by a guy who already had his alarm set for zero-dark thirty — Steve Vassalotti, former co-host and producer of The John DeBella Show. The newly minted Matt Cord Show with Steve Vassalotti will debut Tuesday, Sept. 5 and air weekdays from 6-10am.
Cord’s lengthy radio career has all been spent in Philadelphia — in addition to WMGK, Cord has done mornings on WBEN-FM, afternoons on the former WPLY (Y100), and afternoons and evenings across the hall on WMMR. He brings a universally likable approach to radio and stream listening with his friendly, positive, and enthusiastic approach to life and a mutual love for the Classic Rock artists and songs of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. His passions also extend to local sports, especially the Philadelphia 76ers, where he has served as the in-arena voice for over two decades.
“I’m honored and grateful for the opportunity to host mornings on ‘MGK,” said Cord. “It goes without saying John DeBella is a tough act to follow. I’m excited to have Steve as my co-host as our friendship goes back to his intern days.”
Vassalotti joined The John DeBella Show in 2017 as a part-time board op and rose to the role of full-time producer and co-host. “I’m excited to be teaming up with my friend, and someone I consider one of the smoothest air-talents around,” said Vassalotti, adding, “And it’s nice to continue the tradition of balding morning hosts here at ‘MGK.”
“This is one of the most obvious hires I’ve made,” said Bill Weston, PD of WMGK & WMMR. “Having Matt’s market experience and music knowledge plus his easy-going nature with the added producing chops and additional perspective that Steve brings to the conversation is just a terrific pairing.”
