Best New Radio Name: Little Bacon Bear
• Radio One Urban WKYS/Washington has filled its 7-midnight spot with Khalia “Little Bacon Bear” Canty, effective Monday, November 16. Originally from Topeka, KS, Little Bacon Bear began her DJ career after moving to Maryland in 2012. Since then, as the press release states, “she’s become one of the DMV’s most coveted young DJs. Having spun for brands like Essence and BET, she’s known for being at the forefront of music, nightlife and culture.”
WKYS PD J1 said, “I wanted to step out of the box and do something different with the night position at WKYS. I wanted someone who could relate to millennials and make radio appealing to them. From the first time I met Bacon Bear I knew there was something special about her — she possesses some critical skills that aren’t easily taught, like passion, creativity, humor, charisma, hard work and heart. Bacon Bear represents the next generation of radio and the future of our industry.”
Little Bacon Bear said, “I’m really excited to be a breath of fresh air to not only the radio but to the entire DMV. There’s so much talent in the city and this is just the platform to shine some light on that. I can’t wait to tell the stories of everyday people. I can’t wait to bring listeners more of the best content from the artists they love. I can’t wait to turn up with them every night!” She continued, “A special thank you to the entire Radio One family that has been so inviting and helpful during this transition. Of course I must thank God and my parents Phil and Teresa for all the talent and ability. Thank you for every smile, laugh and piece of encouragement. I can’t wait to continue to make the DMV proud!”
