Detroit Celebrates Rebirth Of ‘Big Boy’
It was just two weeks ago when we reported the artist formerly known as Evan “Chunky” Rose had resigned from his morning co-host spot at Alpha Media Country KUPL (98.7 The Bull)/Portland to accept a new position closer to family on the east coast — we are pleased to tell you that Señor Chunky has returned to Detroit, where today he starts a sweet new gig as morning co-host at Beasley Throwback WMGC (105.1 The Bounce), teamed up with market vet Shay Shay and resurrecting his original air name, “Big Boy.”
The Motor City move is a return to very familiar turf for “Big Boy,” who did nights over on iHeartMedia’s WKQI (Channel 95.5)/Detroit from 2006-2009. Prior to relocating to the Northwest in May 2015, Chunky co-hosted the morning show at the late WDRW (Wired 96.5)/Philadelphia. His major market resume also includes nights at the former WNOW (92.3 Now)/New York, mornings at XHTZ (Z90)/San Diego, and he started his career at WNKS (Kiss 95.1)/Charlotte.
Now comfortably tucked into his new radio home, Big Boy said, “Not only are the city and the people here amazing, but The Bounce literally plays my favorite songs!” Shay Shay remarked, “I’m so excited to be working with Big Boy! We worked together earlier in our careers and had such great chemistry. He’s an amazing talent and I can’t wait to wake up Detroit every morning with an innovative, engaging and entertaining morning show!”
Bounce PD Al Payne said, “This is a big throwback to ‘good times’ for our city! I have been a huge fan of Big Boy for a long time, yet being able to add him to this station and our cast of Bounce Ambassadors is EPIC! Out of everywhere he’s been, he says that there’s no love like DETROIT LOVE! If you partied with Big Boy from ’06 to ’09 — wait ’til you hear him and Shay Shay now!”
Big Boy will have another familiar face with him in the Bounce studio — Executive Producer Ric Hogerheide, Jr., a.k.a. “Producer Weird Beard,” who worked with him in Portland and Philly. “Weird Beard has never had a write up in the trades and I want to surprise him,” Chunky told RAMP. “He has really helped me expand my on-air brand and he is really too smart to be in radio, but I’m glad he is!”
