CKLW Celebrates 50th Anniversary
Fans and friends of the late, legendary CKLW/Detroit celebrated the 50th anniversary of “The Big 8” on Saturday night at an event held Saturday evening in the Detroit suburb of Mount Clemens. Hundreds showed up to meet several of the original “Big 8” jocks and Jo-Jo Shutty MacGregor, the first female helicopter traffic reporter in North America! The DJ on duty played music of the era intermixed with old newscasts by Jo-Jo’s late husband, Byron MacGregor and dozens of Drake-style CKLW jingles.
To further prove that radio listeners love nostalgia and oldies, just look at the ratings across America and how classic hits and classic rock stations are scoring big numbers coast-to-coast. The event in Detroit exemplified that. Pictured, (l-r): Charlie O’Brien, Johnny Williams, Jo-Jo Shutty MacGregor and “Brother Bill” Gable. Thanks, as always, to “Radio’s Best Friend,” Art Vuolo!
