Remembering Gregg Mueller
• We were saddened to learn that Gregg Mueller, Sr. Account Executive with iHeartMedia Honolulu and a well-regarded radio and television broadcast legend in Hawai’i, died on Tuesday, June 23 at the age of 79.
Chuck Cotton, Market President of iHeartMedia Honolulu composed a beautifully heartfelt letter that paid tribute to Mueller the man — and the consummate media professional that he was. Cotton’s letter read, in part, “Gregg Mueller has been an iconic member of the Honolulu Ad Community for over four decades. As a former General Manager for KIKU Television, he enjoyed great success these past 15 years at iHeartMedia. Gregg was a board member of the Hawaii Association of Broadcasters, President of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce, spoke like an ambassador, carried himself like a stateman, and was known as the best dressed man in Honolulu.
Cotton’s letter continued, “Gregg was articulate, brilliant, and educated in areas of intelligence beyond what you would know unless you tripped into it. Gregg was an expert in English, mathematics, gardening, and in more subjects than time would permit to mention. Many don’t know that Gregg’s secret passion was gardening, spending hours every weekend caring for his garden at home and even the garden he created in his office at iHeart. Gregg had a way of carrying for people and plants in a way that gave them a daily dose of kindness that energized those around him.”
In a Facebook post, Jamie Hyatt, longtime SVP of Programming for iHeartMedia Honolulu said of Mueller, “One of the nicest human beings you’d ever meet. The true definition of ‘one of a kind.’ I first met Gregg at Hawaii Association of Broadcasters parties in the late ’90’s. Always a friendly soul. He will be sorely missed. Rest in Paradise, Gregg. #TrueLegend.” Scott Hogle, SVP Sales for iHeartMedia Honolulu said, “I couldn’t write a sales piece or do a presentation without Gregg editing it for me; he took me to another level, whether I wanted to go or not. Gregg had a way of bringing the best out of people.”
Cotton continued, “Gregg’s legacy leaves behind two sons who adored him, a team that will miss him, a marketplace that respects him, and a group of broadcasters and customers who knew him and had the pleasure of experiencing life with him. To the friends and customers of Gregg Mueller from his Ohana at iHeartMedia, we thank you for being part of Gregg’s life.” In closing, Cotton said, “Gregg was deeply loved by family, friends, customers, and co-workers. He was the best of us. He represented a generation of broadcasters who knew how to sell, serve, lead, and treat people with respect and kindness wherever he was. I was honored to know him.”
