Remembering Mike Steele
• The Pittsburgh radio community is mourning the passing of market vet Mike (Steele) Vrable, who died Monday evening. That’s Steele, left, with the legendary Stanley Cup, which at the time belonged to the Pittsburgh Penguins, who won it in 2016 and 2017.
A posting on the website of iHeartMedia Classic Rock WDVE/Pittsburgh reads, “Mike was a part-time jock on ‘DVE, a local producer for the Penguins games on [Alternative WXDX] 105.9 The X, and produced the local segment of the Steelers Radio Network. He also did fill-in work on [Classic Hits WWSW] 3WS and could be counted on at a moment’s notice for anything the stations need… a jack-of-all trades.”
The post continued, “Mike started out at 106.7 The Force in Beaver Falls. He was present for the transition when The Force became 105.9 The X in 1995. After a few years he moved to Austin, TX to work for Rock Station KLBJ. In 2011, he returned to WDVE.
Mike never had a bad word to say about anyone, and rarely complained about life in general. His passion was music, especially local music. Mike will be missed by all.”
