Tulsa’s Barber Steps Down, Successor Sought

• There has been a disturbance in the morning drive force in Tulsa, OK, as 26-year market mainstay Andy Barber has stepped away from mornings on Griffin Classic Hits KBEZ (92.9 The Drive). His final broadcast was Friday, Sept. 26, just short of his seven-year anniversary with the station.

Drive PD Dave “Wavy Davy” Michaels said, “After 53 years in the business, Andy Barber has stepped away (not retiring) from the mic at The Drive and is going out while on top. We will miss his infectious smile and energy in the mornings.”

Born and raised in Southern California, Barber started his radio career at KWYN/Wichita after serving in the United States Air Force. After working in Los Angeles, Seattle, Houston and other markets, Barber arrived in Tulsa in 1993, working at KHTT (106.9 K-Hits) and Cox Media Group’s KJSR (Star 103) before joining KBEZ.

Barber, who will remain in Tulsa, said, “I want to go out on top, sounding fantastic — it was my decision to walk, I LOVE Griffin and all of my Tulsa team! I will miss the daily battle of winning for Griffin Radio… I will be here in spirit.”

The Drive has now issued a nationwide bulletin looking for someone to fill Andy Barber’s large shoes and a appeal to the station’s 35-54 demo. Digital/social media skills are a must, as well as a proficiency with phone editing, Wide-Orbit, interviewing and LIVE broadcasts. Griffin is seeking a great communicator and a fun storyteller with a keen sense of how to create excellent content that will be displayed across all our platforms. Qualified candidates may apply online via the Griffin Communications Careers portal, and attach your resume and MP3 aircheck. You may also send your package to Steve Hunter, Tulsa Director of Radio Operations at steve.hunter@griffin.news.
