Alamo City Latino Battle Brewing
As reported in yesterday’s RAMP, iHeartMedia San Antonio flipped KZEP (Hot 104.5) from Rhythmic to Spanish Top 40 at noon Wednesday, the new station rebranded as 104.5 Latino Hits. Several hours later, Univision made a strikingly similar move across the street, steering Classic Hip Hop KMYO (Yo! 95.1) into that same airspace bearing eerily familiar-sounding new handle — 95.1 Latino Mix, described in the press release as “an English-language station specifically designed for Latino San Antonians,” featuring “a unique blend of today’s Top 40 and Latin Rhythmic hits.” Let the games begin!
95.1 Latino Mix will play a wide range of hits from mainstream Top 40 artists like Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars and The Chainsmokers as well as from Latin core artists like J Balvin, Nicky Jam, Enrique Iglesias and Daddy Yankee. In making the announcement, Chris Morris, VP/GM of Univision San Antonio said, “Latino Mix 95.1 FM looks to draw a bridge between the many cultures, generations and musical styles that are characteristic of San Antonio. Blending English and Spanish organically and merging musical favorites is a reflection of what makes San Antonio so unique. Latino Mix 95.1 FM will bring listeners a fresh approach to music and programming that we know will liven up the airwaves.”
