Condolences: Steve Marx
We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a man who was a friend and mentor to many in our industry — Steve Marx, best known and revered as the longtime VP/GM of WAAF and WFTQ/Worcester, MA (among his many other amazing accomplishments), died May 23 at after a tough battle with pancreatic cancer. He was three weeks shy of his 70th birthday. As Marx’s beautifully written obituary perfectly states of the man, “He was blessed with endless opportunities to use his talents to help improve the lives of a great many others; what more can one ask for?”
Rob Barnett, Sr. Director, Channels Marketing at Audible, was the PD of WAAF under Marx, and in a Facebook post he said of his friend and mentor, “There aren’t a lot of us who can say we’ve been lucky enough to have great bosses. Steve was a rare breed. Back when rock radio was still filled with wild creativity and freedom, Steve was the grown-up who taught us how to work and play like pros, without ever sucking out the fun. Winning energy gave Worcester, Boston, and most of the New England cities we touched, a true, passionate rock radio station in WAAF.”
Lee Arnold, President of Lee Arnold Marketing, commented, “I am brokenhearted passing this news on. The BEST GM I ever worked for passed away. My days at WAAF in Boston were some of my greatest days in Radio, and it was because my dear friend Steve Marx was the Captain of the ship. R.I.P. Steve. Simply, THE BEST.”
Marx is survived by Merrill, his beloved wife of 46 years; his son Jeffrey and daughter-in-law Jessica of Dallas; his daughter Emily and son-in-law Matthew Perl in greater Philadelphia; and his grandchildren, Nathan and Hannah Marx and Oren and Samantha Perl.
