Remembering Barry Richards

• We were shocked and saddened over the weekend to learn that legendary radio/TV personality, and music promoter Barry “The Reazar” Richards passed away peacefully on August 15, surrounded by his family, following complications from a recent series of strokes. He was 83.

A dedicated family man, Barry leaves behind his loving wife Debra, and his sons Gary and his wife Anne, and Paul and his wife, Sivan. Barry was also father to Steve, who passed away on March 21, 2004. His family also includes his grandchildren Riley, Steven, Capri, and Walker, as well as the many people who came in touch with him during his long and successful career.

A media innovator, Barry not only dominated the radio ratings in numerous markets like Los Angeles, Washington, DC/Baltimore, New Orleans, Fresno, and Spokane, but he created many of the “first-of-its-kind” local TV shows centered around music in various genres. Barry eventually moved into concert promotion, and later, music promotion, specializing in Top 40/Mainstream, Rhythmic and Urban formats.

All of this has culminated in nothing short of a well-lived and an amazing life filled with passion for family, radio, music and many friends.

[Ed. Note: I had the privilege of competing against Barry and his late son “Stevie Rocker” in Fresno radio in the ’80s (KMGX vs. KBOS), and later, worked with him as a colleague at Hitmakers alongside two other dearly departed legends — Bob Greenberg and Barry Fiedel.. he was truly a larger-than-life presence in any room.]

Barry’s family thanks everyone for their love and support at this difficult time. A private ceremony for the family will take place soon, followed by a Celebration of Life for Barry in the coming weeks. Details to follow for those who would like to attend.
