Tragedy Hits Too Close To Home

• The effects of the recent tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL have reverberated far beyond the confines of the campus and into our radio community — Melissa Chase, OM/PD of SummitMedia’s Richmond cluster and morning co-host on Hot AC WURV (103.7 Play) took to Facebook to share the harrowing story of her cousin, Dara (pictured, below), a teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas who lost three students when the gunman entered her classroom. Dara is also being called a hero for hiding her students while trying to protect them.

With classes resuming this week, an initiative has been launched to show support for the students and teachers — organizers are calling upon businesses, individuals, churches and other schools to create banners and signs of love that can be hung in the hallways of MSDHS.

As Chase wrote, “I am overwhelmed by your messages asking if there’s anything you can do to help… and today the answer is YES!! Honestly, I don’t want this to become a political conversation thread… this is about supporting the students and teachers who are going through PTSD and returning to their school. These are people who have been through a LOT and are looking for encouragement and love, so if you want to make one of these banners to help show them support, that would be amazing!”

Your banners can be sent to: Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, 5901 NW Pine Island Road, Parkland, FL 33076. Thank you!
