CNN: Feds Investigating CMG Cyber Attack
• It’s been well over a week since Cox Media Group’s television and radio stations across the U.S. were hit by an apparent cyberattack, and as CNN reports, many of these stations are still trying to untangle from the impact, while CMG has still not commented publicly about the alleged attack.
Two sources told CNN they weren’t sure if this was a ransomware attack or some other cyber intrusion, but confirmed that systems used by the stations were adversely impacted and station operations were disrupted. The attack is being investigated by federal law enforcement, one of the sources said.
As of Friday, multiple systems were still down, including access to the digital video library, according to employees from two stations. Weather computers were also not working for at least two stations. Some station employees told CNN they have not yet recovered their email and are working on workarounds. Some stations have reportedly asked staffers not to open email on their phones. Last Wednesday one station was apparently experiencing new issues, including phone lines and broadcast software failing, an employee said.
Again, Cox Media Group and its parent company have not commented publicly about the attack nor has any official statement come from corporate to staff. Stand by for further info… or not.
