Honoring Tony Brown’s Remarkable Career
iHeartMedia Urban AC WDAS/Philadelphia will be honoring noted local radio icon Tony Brown’s 45th anniversary in radio with a special celebration tonight. For nearly five decades, Brown’s silky smooth voice has been synonymous with the sounds of the night in the Delaware Valley. He’s the longtime host of The Quiet Storm, weeknights from 7-midnight and The Sunday Brunch, which airs on Sundays from noon-3pm.
Brown began his radio career at Temple University’s WRTI in 1969, and he joined WDAS in 1972 as host of The Extrasensory Connection, which was rebranded as The Quiet Storm in 1976. The show later migrated across the hall to sister WUSL (Power 99) for eight years before returning to WDAS in 1997, where it continues to draw a devoted following of listeners. Brown also co-wrote the show’s signature theme song, “The Quiet Storm” with Bert Willis, Rob Arthurs and Rudy Gay. Over the course of his lengthy career Brown has been honored numerous times — he is the recipient of the 1999 R&R Industry Achievement Award, the 2002 Vaughn Harper Excellence in Radio Award and the 2006 March of Dimes Achievement in Radio Award.
The tribute to Brown is happening tonight at Relish in Philadelphia and will include a Q&A session with Brown about his legendary career, plus an appearance from soul singer Will Downing, who will be previewing songs from his new album Soul Survivor, including the new single, “I’m Feeling The Love” feat. Avery*Sunshine. “I never imagined my radio career would span 45 years, but then again, I love it so much that I never thought of doing anything else,” said Brown. “With God’s blessings, help from my wife Sunshine and fan support, I’ve been able to keep it going.”
