Bruno, Kendrick Dominate Grammys

• The 60th Annual Grammy Awards made their return to New York City in dramatic fashion on Sunday night, and the broadcast was jammed with bold and emotional moments. Bruno Mars was the night’s big winner, earning three of “Big Four” General Field awards — Record of the Year and Album of The Year for 24K Magic, and Song of The Year for “That’s What I Like,” which was also honored with Grammys for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance, and Bruno’s 24K Magic album was named Best R&B Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. The immensely talented Alessia Cara was awarded the Grammy for Best New Artist.

Kendrick Lamar opened the show with a pyro-fueled opening performance, augmented by appearances from U2’s Bono and The Edge and Dave Chappelle that drew a standing ovation. Lamar went home with an armload of Grammys himself — Best Rap Album for DAMN.; Best Rap/Sung Performance for “Loyalty,” featuring Rihanna and Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance and Best Music Video for “HUMBLE.”

Later in the evening Chappelle returned to accept the Grammy for Best Comedy, and U2 performed “Get Out Of Your Own Way” on a barge in front of the Statue of Liberty. Bono and The Edge returned to Madison Square Garden at the end of the evening to present the Album Of The Year award to Bruno Mars.

The most moving portion of the show was Janelle Monáe‘s powerful #Time’sUp speech, which lead directly into Kesha‘s emotionally raw rendition of “Praying,” supported by a chorus that included Cyndi Lauper, Camilla Cabello, Bebe Rexha, Andra Day and Julia Michaels. The complete list of Grammy winners is posted at Grammy.com.
