Grammy & Oscar Love H.E.R.
• How’s this for an amazing career rush — early Monday morning, some ten hours after winning two Grammy Awards, including one of the four majors, Song Of The Year for “I Can’t Breathe,” as well as her participation in the Best R&B Song, “Better Than I Imagined” by Robert Glasper featuring H.E.R. & Meshell Ndegeocello — RCA recording artist H.E.R. woke up to find out she has been nominated for an Academy Award!
As Steve Pond reports in TheWrap.com, the the 23-year-old singer and songwriter, who also had the honor of performing during January’s Super Bowl, earned an Oscar nomination for her song “Fight for You” from Judas and the Black Messiah. H.E.R. said she didn’t hesitate when she was approached by the filmmakers of Judasto write and perform a song for their film about the FBI campaign to target the Black Panther Party and its chairman, Fred Hampton, in late ’60s Chicago. Hampton, who was played by Daniel Kaluuya, was shot and killed during a raid on his home made possible by FBI informant William O’Neil (Lakeith Stanfield).
“I felt I was part of a history lesson,” she said. “It’s such an important story, and not enough people know the details. The song connects me to that time, and to the fact that what they were fighting for then is a struggle that we are continuing today.” H.E.R. told TheWrap that if the Oscar producers would like her to perform “Fight for You” during the Oscars broadcast on April 25, they won’t have to ask twice. “Oh man, of course I’m ready to do it,” she said. “I hope it happens.” [Photo: The Recording Academy]
