Meet Your Soar Winner

WZYP pictureCumulus Top 40 WZYP/Huntsville, AL put a particularly clever interactive spin on a twenty one pilots ticket giveaway — last Sunday evening, the station held its first-ever “WZYP twenty one pilots Paper Airplane Contest.” The venue was “a local hockey arena” where the hometown Huntsville Havoc was playing the Pensacola Ice Flyers. As OM/PD Steve Smith explains to RAMP, “All last week, we qualified ‘twenty one’ listeners (get it?) who got the chance to ‘pilot’ (get it?) their paper plane on the ice. Upon check-in at the game, we gave them one piece of paper and some small WZYP stickers so they could create their masterpiece. They had five minutes to make their plane. At the end of the game, we brought them all down to the ice to fly their planes — the plane that flew the furthest won a pair of tickets and meet-and-greet passes for twenty one pilots’ sold-out concert in Birmingham on Friday night.”

That’s Smith (right), posing with the happy winner, Lexi Gilchrist (holding her badass plane), who will be taking her sister to the show. Smith says, “For some reason this picture was taken in the penalty box. I think we had to get out of the way because the Zamboni was coming…” Photos of the event are posted on the WZYP Facebook page.
