30 Candles On London’s Norfolk Cake
• Sending our best wishes to a longtime friend, Don London, VP of Operations & Programming for Audacy Virginia (Norfolk and Richmond), who this week celebrates his 30th anniversary in the building!
It was August 2, 1993 when London first arrived in Norfolk as the newly named PD of AC WWDE (2WD), coming off a successful, four-year stint as PD of WZPL/Indianapolis. “I came to the market knowing that we were about to acquire WNVZ, and I would be one of the first duopoly PDs,” London tells RAMP. “Shortly thereafter, I was overseeing four great brands in Norfolk — WNVZ, WWDE, WPTE and WVKL.”
London continued, “This success would not have been possible without a terrific team of professionals all around me and my loving family. Some of my many mentors and advisers include Mike McVay, Dave Brewer,Tom Owens, Bob Henaberry, Alan Burns, John Coleman, Mike Donovan and others. I’ve been fortunate to work with some real superstars, many of whom went on to program their own great radio stations, and our Market Manager Bennett Zier and everyone at Audacy has been incredible. I also appreciate the time and coverage you’ve given me over the years at RAMP, R&R and Hitmakers.”
London added, “I appreciate the stages I’ve been given to perform on. It all started out as a dream I had as a young boy growing up on Long Island, NY listening to WABC/New York — that’s when I decided I wanted to be a DJ and work in radio.”
In closing, London said, “So much has changed in our business, but we’re still winning and still having fun. I’ve been very lucky.” Indeed, against the backdrop of a rapidly changing radio industry, London still enjoys the distinction of being the longest-serving PD of WNVZ, WWDE and WVKL. Your good wishes can be shared with Don at don.london@audacy.com.
