Bobby Rich Unplugs After 50 Years
• Legendary programmer and air personality Bobby Rich has officially announced his retirement, putting an exclamation point on a remarkable half-century radio career that includes 23 radio stations in 14 cities including Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New York, Seattle, San Diego & Tucson; most notably, his work as a Program Director and morning show host at KFMB (B100)/San Diego, KMXZ (94.9 MIXfm)/Tucson, and his current role as Pres., Programmer and morning host on KDRI (The Drive)/Tucson, which is in the process of being sold by Tucson Radio, LLC to Bustos Media.
Rich will share this huge news with his listeners on-air at 7:30am today, and his final show will be Friday, May 12. “This is harder than I expected, even after considering it for six months,” Rich tells RAMP. “It’s my decision and Bustos has allowed me to have a 10-day ‘celebration of retirement.’ Considering how many times I have been denied that honor, it’s a big deal.”
Rich has been a prominent figure in the radio industry since the 1970s, and is the recipient of numerous accolades, including Best Program Director, Best Morning Personality and other awards from Billboard, Radio & Records, and the Arizona Broadcasters Association’s Hall of Fame. He has also been actively involved in supporting local charities and mentoring many up-and-coming broadcasters.
Rich’s retirement marks the end of an era, but his influence will continue to be felt for years to come. “It’s been an honor and a privilege to work in this industry for the last 50 years,” said Rich. “I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to work with so many talented individuals and make so many great memories. I’m excited to begin the next chapter of my life and see what the future holds.” Your best wishes can be shared with Bobby at Bobby@TheDriveTucson.com.
