WLS Gets ‘Unwound’ Again On Sunday

Last year, former WLS personalities Tommy Edwards, Chuck Buell, Chuck Knapp, Jim Kerr, and Catherine Johns gathered at the WLS studios to share stories and revisit memorable audio from WLS’s golden era spanning 1960 through 1985. The response was so enthusiastic that the station has commissioned a WLS Unwound sequel.
This year, WLS favorites Fred Winston, Lyle Dean, and Jeff Davis join the conversation, reliving the laughter, unforgettable moments, and behind-the-scenes experiences that made working at “The Big 89” such a unique chapter in Chicago radio history.
Serving as your host is WLS Historian Scott Childers, noted author, broadcaster, and one of the foremost authorities on the station’s remarkable legacy. Producers Ted Gorden Smucker and Bill Shannon have again assembled a rich collection of audio clips, classic airchecks, and memorable moments designed to remind listeners why WLS and its personalities meant so much to generations of Top 40 radio fans.
• The radio special neatly coincides with the induction of the Radio Hall of Fame Class of 2026, which includes two more WLS legends — Charlie Van Dyke and Fred Winston, whose induction adds to an already impressive roster of WLS honorees that includes Jim Dunbar, Dick Biondi, Larry Lujack, John Records Landecker, Yvonne Daniels, Steve Dahl and Garry Meier, and Don Wade.
This special broadcast of WLS Unwound: Again on WLS-AM 890 is happening Sunday evening, October 11 from 7-9pm CT, and will also livestream at WLSAM.com. [Special thanks to Art Vuolo]
