WMSC Celebrates College Radio Day
• WMSC-FM, Montclair State University’s awesome campus radio station, announced its 30-hour marathon of live programming in honor of College Radio Day (CRD), Friday, October 5. The award-winning, student-operated station will unite with hundreds of college radio stations around the world in an event that aims to raise greater awareness of student-produced content and programming in hopes to attract new listenership. The 2018 College Radio Day theme is “When All Else Fails, College Radio Speaks,” highlighting how students cover stories that might otherwise not be widely covered by mainstream media.
“College radio has greater freedom of choice when selecting which stories to cover out of the news cycle, which results in unique and diverse programming,
said Anabella Poland, GM of WMSC FM. “A big part of my mentorship is helping students find their voice, find a new angle and to think out-of-the-box.” Students agree this approach is far more rewarding as they take their first few steps into broadcast media. Kate Braunstein, student Station Manager, remarked, “Personally, I have learned everything about news reporting for radio right here at WMSC! I learned how to find stories, write newscasts, research stories and find new angles. Despite what seems a repetitive news cycle, we produce a lot of content you don’t hear anywhere else.”
The CRD activities actually get underway tonight at 7pm with Stomp and Stroll Radio, hosted by Pat Cicchetti, followed at 10pm by Anthony Roldan and The Prog Power Station. Starting at midnight, and continuing all day Friday,WMSC’s #CRD2018 festivities include special editions of the stations’ popular shows, exclusive interviews, celebrity shout outs and the CRD Simulcast at 2pm ET, featuring your #CRD2018 Ambassadors — Joan Jett & Kenny Laguna of The Blackhearts, along with former Vice President Joe Biden. At 4pm Friday, WMSC kicks off eight straight hours of back-to-back performances by local bands and artists. The complete schedule is posted online.
