Radio To The Rescue After Dorian
• As Hurricane Dorian continues its slow and relentless march toward the Florida coast, it’s still difficult to fully comprehend the sheer destruction the storm wrought on The Bahamas (in particular, the Abaco islands) which were battered mercilessly during the 40+ hours that the Category 5 (later 4) storm was stalled in place over Grand Bahama Island. At press time, the official death toll stood at 7, but is expected to go much higher.
In an effort to help our island neighbors who are now in desperate need, this Thursday and Friday from 6am-10pm, the stations of iHeartMedia Miami (WHYI, WZTU, WMIA, WMIB, WBGG, WIOD-AM and WINZ-AM) will be broadcasting live and collecting donation items for The #iHeartBahamas Relief Effort to aid the victims of this devastating storm. This is the same team of radio stations that brought truckloads of supplies to those in need after Hurricane Michael devastated Florida’s West Coast last year.
iHeart’s Mobile Mike has been working around the clock with local state and federal law-enforcement, the Florida Highway Patrol and The City Of Miami to organize the biggest humanitarian effort in South Florida. The crew will set up a collection location on Thursday at Dolphin Mall in Miami, and on Friday at The Shops at Pembroke Gardens in Pembroke Pines. They will be collecting new generators, plywood, construction materials (hammers, nails, plumbing and roofing supplies), pop-up tents, gas cans, baby diapers, baby food, baby wipes (only unopened boxed items), new blankets, cots, sleeping bags, air mattresses, tarps, large unopened bags of pet food or full boxes of canned pet food. No clothing or used items will be accepted at this location. Cash donations can be made to The American Red Cross. Thank you in advance for whatever you can donate to this most worthy cause.
