9,000 Pounds Of Love
No, it’s NOT too late to share some positive hurricane relief efforts that are directly powered by radio, so please indulge us as we relay this scenario from Tommy McFly, host of The Tommy Show on CBS Radio’s WIAD (94.7 Fresh FM)/Washington. McFly said, “After Hurricane Harvey hit the Houston area, my co-hosts Kelly and Jen and I reached out to our pal Sarah Pepper, co-host of The Morning Mix on CBS Radio sister KHMX (Mix 96.5)/Houston to check on her, and see what could be done. Sarah told us that Houston’s Clear Creek School district, which has a significant low-income population, had lost most of their school supplies as a result of the storm.”
“Our audience, a.k.a. the ‘Fresh Family’ immediately sprung into action,” McFly tells RAMP. “Within hours we had mobilized 100+ UPS Stores around the Washington DC Beltway to become school supply drop-off locations, and we shared the story on air. In nine days, nearly 9,000 pounds of school supplies were collected. Late last week they were shipped via UPS freight for free, we filled an entire trailer, and the goods arrived yesterday in Texas.” And here is the end result of their efforts: a grateful group of Houston students were on hand yesterday to welcome the UPS truck when it arrived and unloaded.
McFly remarked, “Kelly, Jen and I were so overwhelmed how our ‘Fresh Family’ mobilized for people they had never met. It’s a humbling reminder for us all about the obligation we have as broadcasters.”
