Remembering “Bassman”

• The staff of Radio One’s KMJQ (Majic 102.1) and KBXX (97.9 The Box)/Houston sorrowfully announced the passing of “our brother, friend and co-worker,” Robert “Bassman” Washington, who died on December 17.

Bassman joined Radio One Houston in 1994 as a personality on 97.9 The Box. He also brought inspiration asPraiseman” on Praise 92.1, and in recent years, he’s been the local voice on The Tom Joyner Morning Show on Majic 102.1. A company statement read, “Bassman was the life of every party — from his amazing ‘Robert’s Recipes’ to getting us all in shape with ‘Workout Wednesdays,’ his radio family and all of Houston could depend on him for good information, great music and big laughs.”

Pam McKay, VP/GM of Radio One Houston said of Washington, “He was a man who never met a stranger and always had an encouraging word and a smile.” OM/PD Terri Thomas commented, “He was light. He was laughter and he was love.” Washington is survived by his wife, Nakeysha, other family members and many friends.
