‘Urban’ Dropped From Republic Vocabulary

• With the country witnessing an unprecedented number of protests over the ongoing issues of racial inequality, and with corporations and private citizens actively mobilizing to aid the cause, Republic Records last week made a definitive statement on the matter with this Instagram post that many hope sparks an industry groundswell:

“Effective immediately, Republic Records will remove “URBAN” from our verbiage in describing departments, employee titles and music genres.

We encourage the rest of the music industry to follow suit, as it is important to shape the future of what we want it to look like, and not adhere to the outdated structures of the past.”
