WTOP Preaches, Practices ‘Radio Together’
• Hubbard Radio’s WTOP News/Washington has reached across the street and partnered with Howard University’s WHUR, Entercom’s WPGC, WJFK (106.7 The Fan) & WIAD (94.7 The Drive) and United Media’s WBQH (La Mera Mera 1050)/Silver Spring, MD to participate in the 2020 Radio Together campaign.
Knowing the impact and reach of local radio, WTOP News & Programming Director Julia Ziegler reached out to music stations in the D.C. region with the opportunity to feature Coronavirus Updates, written & produced by WTOP reporters, on their air. These :60 second features are sent four times per day to participating stations, which are also featured in a co-branded on-air campaign promoting the concept of Radio Together.
“We are incredibly excited to partner with each of these amazing radio stations in bringing our community together during the coronavirus crisis,” said Ziegler. “Now, more than ever, the importance of working together and continuing to bring news, information and entertainment to listeners is crucial.” WTOP GM Joel Oxley added, “We are very pleased to be able to work with the great broadcasting owners at Howard University, Entercom and United Media in these challenging times to make this happen. This is what local radio is all about.”
WHUR PD Al Payne remarked, “In times like this, it’s wonderful for us to come together for the good of our community. I applaud WTOP for arranging this partnership and our team looks forward to contributing.” Liz Diaz and Rigoberto Trejo of La Mera Mera 1050 commented, “We never imagined that together we would face a situation as terrible as the coronavirus pandemic. Today, we feel a great responsibility to inform our audience. We feel honored to be part of WTOP’s Radio Together project.”
