Grammys Returning To New York
Rumors have become reality, as it was formally announced that, after 14 years on the west coast, the Grammy Awards® are returning to New York City on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018, perfectly timed to the Grammy’s 60th anniversary. The Recording Academy®, in close collaboration with the Mayor’s Office of New York City, Madison Square Garden and CBS Corporation, announced that Music’s Biggest Night® will take place at Madison Square Garden, which last played host to the Grammys in 2003. The show has been based at Staples Center in Los Angeles for the past 14 years. Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy said, “As a native New Yorker and lifelong supporter of the city’s vibrant arts scene, I couldn’t be more excited to return in 2018 and celebrate 60 years of honoring the best of the best in recorded sound in the world-class venue that is Madison Square Garden.” The Grammy Awards are estimated to bring $200 million in economic benefit to the city.
To announce the show’s return to New York, The Recording Academy worked with creative agency TBWA\Chiat\Day and director Spike Lee on a star-studded promo film, NY Stories, a tour of the city featuring New York artists sharing their musical stories at various landmarks. Lee commented, “I’m honored to be a part of this homage to the city I love, that is welcoming the 60th anniversary of the Grammys into its big warm arms.”
The Grammys will be broadcast live on both coasts at a new time — 7:30 to 11pm ET/4:30 to 8pm PT on CBS. The 60th Annual Grammy Awards marks the 46th consecutive year that CBS has broadcast the show, and the network has a commitment in place to host it through 2026.
