Corey Back To Boston As PD Of WKLB
After more than a decade in Canada, David Corey is making his triumphant return to America — and the city where he made his radio start — Boston, hired by Beasley Media Group as the new PD of Country WKLB. He will succeed Mike Brophey, who yesterday announced his retirement. We recently reported that Corey had resigned his position as VP of Radio Programming at Bell Media in Toronto, where he worked for the past 10 1/2 years, managing all aspects of programming for 105 radio stations and overseeing the day-to-day programming of Canada’s No. 1 station, CHUM-FM. The move back to Boston marks a radio homecoming for Corey, who famously spent 22 years at iHeartMedia’s WXKS (Kiss 108), rising from 17-year-old intern to APD/MD before departing in June 2006. Later that year he arrived at CHUM-FM/Toronto as Program Coordinator, and was upped to PD in August 2007.
Beasley EVP of Programming Justin Chase said, “David’s exceptional programming experience, leadership, and successful track record in the Boston market make him the perfect fit for WKLB-FM. We are always looking for top notch programmers for our company and we’re thrilled to welcome someone of his caliber to Beasley Media Group.” Director of Programming Cadillac Jack said, “David possesses the unique combination of being an excellent strategist and talent developer, as well as a battle-tested winner. He’s a one-of-a-kind competitor that we are fortunate to add to our Beasley Media Boston team of programmers!”
Corey commented, “I’m excited to have the opportunity to return home to Boston to work at WKLB-FM. It’s an amazing station with an incredible history in Country radio. I look forward to working with Justin Chase, Mary Menna, Cadillac Jack and the entire team at the station!”
• Earlier in the day it was announced that current WKLB PD Mike Brophey had decided to retire. Brophey’s wife, longtime WKLB APD/MD Ginny Rogers is also stepping down. Brophey has been at the controls of WKLB since 1996. Before that he spent 13 years with sister WXTU/Philadelphia. Beasley Boston VP/Market Manager Mary Menna said, “Mike has been considering retiring from the day to day for some time. They both have been instrumental to the evolution of the station over the years. We are very grateful to Mike and Ginny for everything they have done and wish them the very best in the next chapter of their lives.”
