93X Goes The Distance For Charity
Why are all these people smiling? (And who is that poor bastard intern who got roped into wearing that giant plastic bowling pin costume in the Florida heat?) Ah, who cares — it was all done for a great cause! The crew at Sun Broadcasting Alternative WXNX (93X)/Ft. Myers-Naples, FL got an early jump on the spirit of Thanksgiving — while giving a vaguely cursory nod to the concept of fitness — when they held their 2nd Annual “. 05K Race to the Bar.” Yes, you read that right — we’re talking a grueling 164 feet of non-stop running to reach the bar at Ft. Myers’ swanky HeadPinz Entertainment Center. As 93X APD/MD Anthony “Roach” Proffitt explains to RAMP, “We even had a stand set up at the ‘halfway point’ to throw down a quick beer!”
All of this good, clean hop-based fun was all done in the name of charity, as participants coughed up over $1300 for the Harry Chapin Food Bank, which helps feed hungry Southwest Florida families during the holidays. “With that money they were able to purchase over $8500 worth of food,” said Roach, adding, “All participants who donated received a commemorative ’93X .05K Race to The Bar’ t-shirt, a $10 gift card to HeadPinz and a 93X beer mug (with the first fill-up paid for!), and for 93 minutes we had 93 cent drafts. However, the real winners here are the families who get to sit around the table and have some food with their family over the holidays. Without this silly race, they may not have been able to, and for that, we give thanks to all those who ran to the bar for a great cause!”
Flush with this success, Roach says the station is already planning a bigger and better 2017 race, as he said, “Next year we hope to have a 93X artist come out as well, so attention record label friends — mark the second week of November on your calendar and start plotting your bands routing down here now. Why not — South Florida in mid-November — not a bad place to be!”
