Rush To Kick Cancer’s Ass
• We are sending out our most sincere positive thoughts and prayers to Russell Rush, PD of iHeartMedia Top 40 KXXM (96.1 NOW)/San Antonio, who has bravely climbed into the ring to kick cancer’s ass — Rush, an Alamo City radio mainstay for the past 14 years, made the emotional on-air announcement on Friday that he had been diagnosed with a rare and incurable form of cancer called T-Cell Lymphoma.
Accompanied by his co-host, Raven, Rush remarked, “I’ve kept this to myself for years, worried what people would say or think, or just to appear vulnerable. I now actually realize that that’s weakness, and this is strength.” As one of Rush’s friends told him, at a time like this, “It’s ok to not be OK.”
As Rush explained to his audience, there is no cure for his condition, “just treatment, and a hope for remission.” Rush began his first course of radiation therapy last week, and his next round is scheduled for today. In order to focus on his treatment, Rush will be stepping away from his job for the next few weeks. And as Russell was reminded, he has a huge network of people who want to send him good vibes and prayers, and that is exactly what he needs night now.
Over the weekend we made contact with Rush, who told us, “At times like these you’re reminded how small of a community the radio world is… Huge thank you to Matt Martin and Chuck Knight, who have been incredibly supportive and helped me to realize right now it’s time to focus on me.” Please keep Russell in your prayers, and feel free to email your notes of support to Rush@961now.com.
