Tonya & Sonic: Energy Tonic
CBS Radio Top 40 KEGY (Energy 103.7)/San Diego has rolled out its new morning show, lovingly constructed using two very familiar station vets — Tonya Gonzalez has joined forces with Energy afternoon personality Sean “Sonic” Leckie to form the mighty Tonya and Sonic morning show. Last month we reported longtime Energy morning host AJ Machado had unplugged and crossed the hall to Hot AC KyXy to anchor AJ Mornings with Sara Perry. PD Chris Patyk commented, “There’s no mistaking the drive and passion Tonya and Sonic have for winning. Their chemistry together is undeniable and they know this city and the Energy listeners. We’re excited to bring everyone along for the ride.”
Gonzalez got her first radio break in 2007 as an intern at iHeartMedia Top 40 KHTS (Channel 933), gradually moving up through promotions and programming and spent 10 years as Machado’s co-host. Sonic also broke in as an intern for AJ’s Playhouse on Channel 933, and later went on to produce the show and do nights there. After an 18-month stint in afternoons at iHeartMedia Top 40 WWPW (Power 96.1)/Atlanta, Sonic returned to San Diego in October 2014 to do afternoons on Energy 103.7.
Gonzalez said, “I’m beyond thrilled to officially kick off something new, something local, something fresh for our listeners here in San Diego with my partner Sonic, who I have worked with in many ways over these past 10 years. His fire, his heart and determination are contagious and makes me excited to begin this journey with him.”
“What a radio ride I’m on right now!” Leckie exclaimed. “Starting as intern in this market with a huge morning talent, I never imagined I would be co-hosting morning drive in San Diego. Thank you to Tonya for believing in me to team up and share the airwaves with her. Big thank you to Peter Schwartz, Chris Patyk, and everyone else behind us in the building!” An official launch party for the new show is happening Thursday, September 28 at Lair Nightclub in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter.
